Canton Girls Basketball 2019 Highlights

Although there was a rough end to the year for the Canton Girls Basketball team, there were positive highlights throughout the season that people tend to forget about.
The final championship game at Mohegan Sun was between Canton, a public school, and Trinity Catholic, a Catholic and recruit school. Unfortunately, the Trinity Catholic girls held a victory over Canton with a seven point lead.
Out of the final four teams in the Class S championship, Canton was the only public school left standing.
Despite the loss at Mohegan, the Canton girls had an outstanding season. Senior Captain Sarah Bowman said she “wouldn’t trade her team for another state championship title.” Bowman played on the team her whole high school career; three out of the four years getting to go to Mohegan for the state title. Her freshman and sophomore year she contributed to a Class S state championship title.
The Canton girls went undefeated in their NCCC Conference during the regular season, only losing one game to Notre Dame of Fairfield, a Class L team. The team also won their conference tournament, and it was the first time the girls had won a conference tournament title since the 1990s.
Canton girls went the whole season with 26 wins and two losses, which broke a school record for the most wins in Canton girls basketball history.
After the upset last year, which was losing to Trinity Catholic in the first round of states by a buzzer beater, the team was determined to get back on their feet this year.
Despite the loss, the girls had a great season behind them, contributing to school records and ‘2019’ being added to the Girls Basketball Conference Tournament banner in the gym. The girls also had four players, senior Captain Sarah Bowman, junior Allison Celmer, junior Captain Abby Charron, and junior Lauren Eschenbrenner win an award for All Conference for the NCCC.
The girls basketball season, 2018-2019, was a great season despite the loss in the state final because of the hard work they contributed to the game and the bond they had with one another.
