There are many phenomena about which we know very little. Among them is the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. What really happens to those who venture within its boundaries? What happened to those boats and planes that disappeared within its zone?
The Bermuda Triangle is located on the stretch of the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by a line from Florida to the islands of Bermuda, to Puerto Rico, then back to Florida.
In this region, there’s been unexplained disappearances of dozens of ships and airplanes. They seemingly vanish from the area in good weather without sending distress signals back to their bases. Within the 500,000-1,500,000 square miles of ocean it covers, where did the planes and boats go?
An example of a disappearance was the infamous tragedy that happened in March 1918, when the USS Cyclops, a 542 foot long Navy cargo ship with over 300 men and 10,000 tons of manganese ore onboard, sank somewhere between the Barbados and the Chesapeake Bay. Despite being equipped to do so, it never sent out a distress call. With extensive searching, there was no sign of the wreckage.
Two of the Cyclops’ sister ships, the USS Proteus and USS Nereus, similarly vanished without a trace along nearly the same route in 1941.
Another unexplained disappearance occurred on December 1945. During this time, five navy bomber planes holding fourteen men were forced to ditch into the sea off of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after their compasses allegedly malfunctioned and the leader got lost. At this rate, they flew undirected into the sea when their fuel was low. Around the same time, a rescue plane and its 13 man crew also disappeared.
Despite week long searches for the lost planes, there was failure in finding any evidence.
Gulfstreams, reefs, and storms have the ability to cause troubles in the area in terms of navigation. The U.S. Coast Guard claims they don’t view the Bermuda Triangle as a hazardous place, due to the lack of indication that “casualties were the result of anything other than physical causes.”
The reason we question and immerse ourselves in the theories about the Bermuda Triangle is that we are curious as to how these disappearances happen, because finding a probable cause to these mysteries is almost as if one was trying to find a common cause of every single car accident in Connecticut.
Despite all the realities that check out, there are always going to be some questions circulating the Bermuda Triangle and its disappearances.
