Good afternoon CHS families!
Notes from the Principal:
Happy New Year! We hope you were able to enjoy some time with family and friends over the holiday recess. You can feel the renewed energy in the atmosphere, and it appears that the new year is off to a great start!
Prior to vacation, Superintendent Case and I were honored to attend a reception which recognized CHS student Noah O’Leary, who was selected to receive the Farmington Valley Superintendent’s Award for service, leadership and citizenship. He and other students and their families were recognized at a luncheon at the Farmington Country Club. For more on this award and Noah’s accomplishments, check out this article. Congratulations Noah!
We are extremely proud of entire student body for their devotion to the many community outreach programs that are sponsored each year. Students from our Spanish classes came together during this holiday season and made cards and wrote well wishes to Spanish speaking patients at Hartford Hospital. Not only did they bring cheer to those who may need some extra cheer, but they were able to practice their Spanish at the same time! For pictures, take a look at our website.
January is the time to begin thinking about final exams for students taking semester long classes in the first semester. The final exam schedule is as follows (Please note that final exams will have no impact on the regular, daily class schedule for that day.):
Thursday, January 19th and Friday, January 20th:
Psychology
Law and Order
Modern Global Studies
Health and Wellness
Monday, January 23rd and Tuesday, January 24th:
AP World History (Grade 10)
Anatomy and Physiology
Semester English Courses (Heros & Monsters and Shakespeare (H))
Canton Parents for Music is sponsoring their first ever Coffee House tonight at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria. There is no cover charge for this event, and we hope you can make it out to enjoy the talents of some of our students. Coffee, hot cocoa, snacks and goodies will be available for purchase. Come enjoy the music, and bring a board game if you would like! Hope to see you there!
Don’t forget to purchase your Wizards tickets before they are sold out! The game is Tuesday, Jan 10 at 7:00pm at CHS. The Canton teachers are stretching, practicing and planning their game strategy! Come see who wins this epic battle of wits, laughs and will! Tickets are still available at www.harlemwizards.com. Don’t miss your chance to buy online and SAVE – save $5 per child ticket and $2 savings per adult versus buying at the door! The last day to turn in paper order forms is Friday, January 6th.
If you didn’t have a chance to clean your coat racks over the break, there is still time! CATA’s winter clothing drive runs through January 18th. All gently used winter clothing and footwear in all sizes can be brought to the CHS office and/or room 109.
Athletic News
The winter sports season is off and running. As always, check out the athletics/CIAC website for the most up to date information on home and away contests.
The athletics department has begun a wonderful fundraiser for Building for the America’s Bravest organization. This link brings you to our online store that is available only to our Canton families. It will lead you to specific apparel available for purchase where a portion of the proceeds will be contributed to this great organization. HURRY THOUGH! The on-line store is only open until January 9th!
The athletic department will also be accepting donations at ALL HOME basketball games. Each donation includes a silicon wristband designed specifically for Canton. I thank you in advance for your donation and encourage you to support the Canton Athletics as well as our American soldiers.
For students interested in playing baseball in the spring, they should mark their calendar for an introductory meeting to be held on Wednesday, January 11th at 3pm in room 140.

Seniors:
Congratulations to our seniors, who, so far, have reported 67 acceptances to colleges! This is great news, but with almost 600 applications having been completed (so far!) we know that there are many more out there. Please report all decisions to your counselor: accepted, deferred, denied. To those “regular decision” seniors who are still waiting: hang in there! And to all~ remember that a mid-year report will be sent to EVERY college automatically, so focus on a strong finish to the semester.
Scholarships:
- Seniors should complete the FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov in order to receive financial aid for college. Information about local scholarships coming soon. Meanwhile:
- All Canton residents: Create an account at www.
cantondollarsforscholars.org/ to be eligible for local scholarships. - All Hartford County residents: Create an account at www.hfpg.org/ to be eligible for scholarships from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving
Juniors/Parents:
Please make your appointment for your Junior Meeting! All appointments should take place over the next four weeks.
Freshmen:
All freshman will need to be sure they have created a CollegeBoard account by Monday (see: email sent previously for details) in order to access PSAT scores. We will see you in science class next week.
LEAVE A LEGACY BRICK
Lights On Canton, the committee raising funds for permanent lights for the CMS/CHS track & field athletic complex, is proud to announce the opening of its “Leave A Legacy” patio brick fundraiser. This large, gorgeous new patio will be placed at the heart of the athletic complex and will feature a dramatic “BIG C” design in Warriors colors. We invite everyone in Canton to show your Warrior pride and donate a brick to the new patio. Here is your ordering information!
Fully customizable bricks make an amazing way to recognize family members, an organization name or an individual achievement. A brick also can serve as a lasting memorial to a loved one or a cherished veteran. A variety of clipart can be added to the brick to reflect a commitment to sports, the arts, our nation or Canton Warriors. Bricks also make outstanding gifts to recognize a parent, teacher or coach!
Standard size (4-inch-by-8-inch) richly hued red bricks are available for $100 donation and include three lines of customizable text. Larger (8-inch-by-8-inch) red bricks are $250 and include 5-6 lines of text and the addition of optional clipart from the library on-line. Our premium, large grey bricks are featured in the center of patio inside the bold “BIG C” design. These limited bricks are available for $750 and include 6 lines of text. Your donation is fully tax deductible. Don’t miss this opportunity to leave a legacy while supporting Canton athletes and the Canton community! For more information or to donate your brick, visitwww.polarengraving.com/
Lights on Canton also invites you to “Be a Beacon” in the Canton community by making a larger donation as well. Donations of $1000 or greater will be recognized on a handsome bronze plaque prominently placed at the athletic complex. Consider donating with another family, friends or even your street! In addition, many employers will match your donation at 100%. Here is yourdonation form!
Please contact Kimberly Marze at [email protected] or Angela Tollis at [email protected] for questions about brick donations or “Be a Beacon” gifts.
