A tale of Queen

On November 2nd, 2018, the tribute movie to Queen, one of the greatest rock bands of all time, premiered, and portrayed the renaissance of the group.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a chronicle of the years that eventually led up to Queen’s performance in 1985 at the Live Aid benefit concert, starting with the band members meeting for the first time in Ealing Art College, not expecting how drastically their career paths would change.
Farrokh Bulsara, who eventually changed his name to Freddie Mercury, was the lead singer and pianist of the band. In the movie, he is portrayed by Rami Malek, who does a fantastic job filling the shoes of the vibrant and magnificent Mercury. Malek successfully aced the peacock strut by watching  film footages to pick up on stage mannerism and attitude, perfecting Mercury’s ethereal and exquisite essence. In addition, Malek rehearsed extensively with a singing and piano coach who helped him morph into Mercury.
The other members of the band are  also accurately portrayed in the movie. The drummer, Roger Taylor is played by Ben Hardy, the guitarist, Brian May  is played by Gwilym Lee, and the bassist, John Deacon is  played by Joseph Mazzello. The band’s relationship in the movie was displayed in a real way, showing true friendships and the importance of close friends.
The movie covers Mercury’s struggle with drug and sex addiction, and includes the controversy about his sexuality. Despite the film being about the ascendance of Queen as a legendary rock band, the movie allows the audience to grow up with Mercury himself, and understand what lay behind the fame before his untimely death.
The movie includes the production of some of Queen’s greatest hits, including the making of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was initially denied by a record company due to the song being six minutes long. The label asserted that the song would never be played on the radio because of how operatic it sounded, and because listeners would not know Queen well enough to listen.

The movie leads up to the Live Aid concert that Queen performed at in 1985, playing “Bohemian Rhapsody” (featuring the ballad section and the guitar solo), “Radio Ga Ga,” “Hammer to Fall,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Will Rock You,” and “We Are the Champions.”
The  movie also portrays how news spread about the epidemic of AIDS, a blood transmitted disease that was incurable. Mercury, who died in 1991 at age 45 of bronchial pneumonia, a complication  from the AIDS, is seen struggling with his illness in the movie.
The movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” brings joy and sheds interesting information about the band, recreating their top hits and showing how Queen cherished their fame and opportunities. It also digs deeper into Mercury’s life. All in all, the movie is a must-see for its beautiful portrayal of one of the greatest rock bands of all time
