Twenty students participated in Canton High School’s Search Environmental Club annual Heublein Tower hike on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. The students were accompanied by CHS staff Benn Gawitt, Marsha Jorgensen, Brian Gottier, Diane Sodaro and Stephen Riley. The trail provided views across the Farmington River valley to the far off Berkshire Hills from the ridge with an elevation of 950 feet.
Junior Amanda Daigle said that the hike was fun and the weather was perfect. She would most definitely recommend it to anyone.
Teacher Mr. Gawitt said that the hike was a combination of exercise and relaxation. There was high visibility and fresh mountain air. The view was beautiful and they were able to see the Metacomet Ridge and even turkey vultures.
Students also saw where General Dwight D. Eisenhower was prompted at a gathering at the Tower to run for the presidency of the United States.
While the hike was both exercise and relaxing for the students and staff, they also addressed the geological process that formed and shaped the ridge. One geologic formation of basalt rock served as a talking point about the geology of the area and its volcanic past. Rocks dated in the area are 200 million years old.
The annual hike, sponsored by the CHS Search Environmental Club presents a way for the students to get outside, hike, explore, socialize and learn about Connecticut’s past and present .
Students interested in the environment are always welcome to join the Search Environmental Club and meetings are held on Tuesdays at 7:15 AM in Mr. Gawitt’s room.
